| Big Red Dollars now off campus
A Big Red Dollar is just as good as the green ones in some Bowling Green stores. Western students can now use their Big Red Dollars to purchase items such as food and school supplies in stores that have installed Big Red Card readers. Students will swipe the Big Red Card just as they would on campus, said ID Center Director Gary Meszaros. The system will be compatible with the Big Red Cards students currently have, he said. Six businesses are offering the service, and another might join by the end of the week, ID Center Manager Sherry Blanton said. New businesses are being added to the list all the time, Blanton said. Meszaros said there's no limit to how many stores and businesses can participate in the program.
Whitfield schools not outsourcing food services at this time
Some administrative meetings this week with food services managers in Whitfield County Schools led to fears that some cafeteria workers may be outsourced. But central office staff members chalk the worries up to "assumptions gone wild." While Richard Schoen, executive director for assessment and accountability, acknowledges the district has prepared an RFP (Request For Proposal) seeking data regarding outsourcing such workers, he said the request is simply exploratory."It doesn't mean a decision has been made at all," Schoen said. "We're just gathering information."George Smalley, assistant superintendent for operations, went into more detail to explain why he called a meeting Monday with food service managers at each school."We had some issues going on with staff changes, and I wanted to make sure we were all on the same page," Smalley said.
Schools rethink food policies
Rising costs, stagnant customer numbers and new laws requiring healthier food choices have motivated Greenwich Public Schools to examine its food services operation. "It was a triple whammy," said John Hopkins, food services director who oversees the schools' cafeterias. .
