| Carneys Point woman takes gold at national senior games
CARNEYS POINT TWP. She may have never graced a cereal box, or had her own shoe named after her, but Pollie Townend is an athlete through and through. At 87 years old, the Carneys Point resident has become a force to be reckoned with at the Summer National Senior Olympics. And in her seventh games as an athlete, she earned her first gold medal at this year's events in Louisville, Ky. Before she packed it up she picked up a silver in the 50-yard backstroke, a bronze in the javelin and a fourth-place finish in the discuss as well. Townend earned her gold medal in the 50-yard breast stroke, in what she said was a time that just broke 1:23:00. For her the win has capped off an illustrious career, which admittedly began a little late by today's standards. "I played basketball in high school and played a lot after, but I didn't break any records.
