ELL students finish program

DALLASTOWN SCHOOLS — The Dallastown Area School District recently finished its summer program for English Language Learner students and their parents.

Instructional Program Specialist Alma Row said 13 students, from first grade through high school, and two parents participated in the week-long program.

The program helps the students and their parents to connect with the community and increase communication skills in English, Row said.

The group took a virtual road trip through the United States to have a greater understanding of the country, she said.

The trip started in York County and went to Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Francisco, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Google Earth, literature, games and cooking were incorporated in the activities.

"It was tons of fun," Row said.

State, IBM show off service center, but doubts linger

The state human services agency provided a look yesterday at a service center that will change the way Indiana delivers food stamps and other welfare benefits.

But questions remain among some advocates and others who work with recipients.

Schools rethink food policies

Rising costs, stagnant customer numbers and new laws requiring healthier food choices have motivated Greenwich Public Schools to examine its food services operation.

"It was a triple whammy," said John Hopkins, food services director who oversees the schools' cafeterias.

Tech center to close, but that's a sign of progress

One of the Clark County School District's popular vocational programs will soon cease to exist, arguably a victim of its own success.

The Area Trade Technical Center in North Las Vegas, which offers vocational training and career programs to juniors and seniors enrolled at comprehensive high schools elsewhere in the district, will close at the end off the 2008-09 academic year. The program's final crop of juniors began classes this week.

Next year, only seniors will be enrolled.

Kathleen Frosini, director of career and technical education for the district, said Clark County students will ultimately have a longer list of career and technical programs to choose from at more convenient locations.

"We're expanding the options, not narrowing them," said Frosini, who opened the center as its principal in 1982.
