PORTSMOUTH AREA

Investigations into drive-by shooting: A little more than a week after someone fired six bullets at union boss Bill Roach's Rye home and car, numerous agencies have announced separate investigations. Investigating agencies include the state attorney general's office, state police, Rye and Portsmouth police and the Pease Development Authority. Just before 4:30 a.m. Aug. 24, Roach's Sagamore Road home was pierced with one bullet and another shattered windows of a car parked in his driveway. Roach is a part-time harbormaster and the local president of the International Longshoremen's Association. A week earlier, a replica of a tombstone was left at the Port — his place of employment — with his initials on it. Foodbanks report shortages: The Seacoast Consumer Alliance Food Pantry on Islington Street is feeling the brunt of food pantry donations shortages statewide.

Chef finds TV cooking frenzy is no act

You'd never know that up-and-coming New York chef Tony Liu is a local boy at heart. Until you listen to his mild-mannered, modest speaking style.

He put green peppers on his menu because they remind him of visiting Shirokiya in his younger years. "Food is such a strong memory for anybody," Liu said recently from his West Village restaurant after he finished service in the middle of the night. "Cooking always comes from the heart."

The 1992 Kaiser High School graduate, born and raised on Oahu, opened his restaurant, August, in 1994. Though he and his restaurant garnered attention when the New York Times published a review, millions of people are getting to know him this week as he challenges Mario Batali on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America," a dream come true for Liu.

"I watch 'Iron Chef' religiously," Liu said.

Sustainable Living: Lesson in smart school lunches

As our children go back to school soon, they might be missing a crucial lesson: Low-fat vegetarian lunches rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains can help young people maintain healthy body weights and reduce the risk of chronic disease later in life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, with our current rate of obesity, one-third of the children born in 2000 will develop diabetes. The statistic is up to one-half for African American and Hispanic children. Asthma, allergies, anxiety disorders and learning disabilities all can be traced to diet. Something has gone terribly wrong with our children's nutrition.

Who decides what our children eat in school? The Farm Bill is one deciding factor, because it controls national policy on school lunches.

Lu Wen-hsueh, a 47-year-old man who is switching professions mid-life, and his 12-year-old son, Lu Shih-wei, who graduated from elementary school a couple of months ago, decided to spend the summer vacation taking a walk around Taiwan. The father and son pair set out from the seaside town of Danshui, which is northwest of Taipei, on July 13. The pair spent 50 days walking over 1,200 kilometers, visiting many of the highlights that Taiwan has to offer. Along their journey, they encountered typhoons three times and one earthquake. The Lus are set to arrive back in Danshui on Saturday, completing their long journey.

When the father and son pair reaches their destination in Danshui on Saturday, Lu Shih-wei plans to mimic the scene of American soldiers planting the United States flag on Iwo Jima during World War II.
