ELL students finish program

DALLASTOWN SCHOOLS — The Dallastown Area School District recently finished its summer program for English Language Learner students and their parents.

Instructional Program Specialist Alma Row said 13 students, from first grade through high school, and two parents participated in the week-long program.

The program helps the students and their parents to connect with the community and increase communication skills in English, Row said.

The group took a virtual road trip through the United States to have a greater understanding of the country, she said.

The trip started in York County and went to Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Francisco, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. Google Earth, literature, games and cooking were incorporated in the activities.

"It was tons of fun," Row said.

From the kitchen: Different ways to prepare hamburgers

Labor Day weekend signifies the ending of summer in many parts of the country. Since Jim's retirement at the beginning of summer we have been preparing to “head north" for as many weeks of summer and fall as we could fit in this year. Actually, we have had a lot reserved in an RV campground in Angola, Ind., for nearly a year now.

Just as we counted down the days until Jim's last day at UF, we did the same when it came to our son-in-law arriving to haul our 5th wheel to its new home. We followed a few days later arriving this past Sunday evening and were welcomed by temperatures in the high 60s.

As we were settling in, conversations got around to the upcoming holiday weekend and how all of the now empty campsites and unoccupied RV units would be filled as the park became a bustling community with families and friends gathering for the last official holiday of the summer season.

Black Studies Movement Building

Since 1976, the accomplishments of prominent African-Americans have been celebrated each February during Black History Month. But Rochester City School District officials say that isn't enough.

They met Thursday with local scholars, activists, teachers and students to discuss plans to add an African and African-American curriculum in all city public schools.

School board member Van White is the man behind the idea.

“This is a cultural change for the district," White explained. “So this isn't just one classroom where you're going to find this being taught, this should be taught in different ways throughout the district at kids levels K through 12."

Some African-American culture is being taught in city schools. But it's a small portion of the history and social studies curriculum.

State to probe care at Yountville veterans home

A legislative committee on Wednesday ordered the state auditor to investigate the nation's oldest and largest veterans home after residents and employees at the Yountville facility registered numerous complaints about the quality of service attributed mainly to understaffing.

State Sen. Patricia Wiggins, D-Santa Rosa, said she requested the audit after her office received about 100 pages of letters complaining about the level of care at the Veterans Home of California at Yountville, a 123-year-old, state-run facility that includes a hospital and houses about 1,100 residents.

One letter came from Ron Muzio, a disabled Korean War veteran who has lived at the Yountville home for eight years followed by five years at the hospital.

"When you enter the grounds at Yountville, they look beautiful, but when you enter the hospital, it's a different story," Muzio told members of the Joint Legislative Audit committee during a hearing Wednesday.

Lorraine Bracco to introduce new wine in Hamptons

Actress Lorraine Bracco is about to unveil Rosato, a new rose from Salento, Italy, the ninth wine under her Bracco Wines label. On Aug. 26, a lucky group of invited guests will gather at the Water Mill mansion of Bracco's friend, real estate principal/chef Andrew Borrok, for hors d'oeuvres and a tasting of the new import.

Borrok's home is a 20,000-square-foot neoclassical dwelling built in 2005. While he made his fortune in real estate (he recently sold a building Manhattan for $350 million, according to his publicist), Borrok is an accomplished chef who will now concentrate on his culinary career, his publicist said.

Also in attendance will be a retinue of real estate power players from the Corcoran Group, including Corcoran's president and chief executive officer Pamela Liebman, marketing strategist Neal Sroka, who heads Corcoran's Sroka Group, and Robby Browne, Corcoran senior vice president and one of the company's top agents in New York City.
