Letters to the Editor

Over the course of the past couple of years we've read in the papers, or heard over the grapevine, of many simmering neighborhood disputes, some of which have escalated into full-blown battles. In the late spring and summer we all forget these disputes while treading water. As summer winds down we'll be able to go back to more broadly focused pursuits, and to worrying about what our neighbors are doing. Here is a starter list of all the things that annoy you and/or your neighbors. It is hardly comprehensive, but many are irritants that I've heard mentioned.

Clothes on the line. Clothes on the lawn. Clothes hanging over the porch rails. Unclothed bodies in the yard. La Boheme at dawn. Rap music at sunset. Neighbors emulating Pavarotti or Callas on the front porch. Testosterone fueled boys doing wheelies and laps around the yard or in the neighboring woods in go-carts and ATVs.

Parents complain on CBS kid's reality series

A CBS reality series in which youngsters run their own town evoked complaints from one of the children's parents.

"Kid Nation", slated to premiere Sept. 19, was filmed over 40 days during April and May in a movie-set town in the high desert just south of Santa Fe.

Win the nightly dinner dash

Ready, set ... GO! How much can you do in a day, and how fast can you do it? For many folks, the clock starts ticking the moment they rise, and by the end of the day, they're still racing -- to get home to the tasks that await them there. So what gives?

Unfortunately it's often a healthful meal at the family dinner table. By the time Mom and Dad have worked a full day, and they've picked up Johnny and Judy from soccer, and then Jane from band practice, they're hard-pressed to put a meal on the table at a decent hour. If they make it to the table at all.

"My husband and I were always grabbing takeout, and sometimes one of us would eat on the road," says Susan Lewis, a Hawaii Kai mother of two teenage sons who works full time.

Pack a healthy school lunch for your bunch

Most every child in school looks forward to lunch period. It's a time to relax, get out of the classroom and indulge in some of their favorite foods.

For parents who pack their kids lunches, it is more important than ever to make sure they are getting satisfying yet healthy choices.

With the growing levels of childhood obesity in the United States, parents today need to "think outside the lunch box" when it comes to packing school lunches this year. A few helpful tips can make any lunch delicious and healthy for kids. These are from Mary Ellen Renna, a pediatrician and author:

• Don't focus on packing a "meat" sandwich. Avoid processes lunch meats and substitute that with the child's favorite vegetable with low-fat cheese or tofu as the main focus.
