| Freshman 15: Quick and easy access to campus junk food can really pack on the pounds
For some freshmen during the first week of school, walking up the Hill comes with ease. The second week may not be as easy. Toward the end of the semester the trek up the Hill might be equivelant to a 10-mile run. The Hill's not getting steeper, but freshmen are getting fatter. During the first semester of college, many incoming freshmen gain what is known as the "Freshman 15." The Freshman 15 is the expected weight gain for most freshmen during their first year of college. Weight gain can be a huge wake-up call for most freshmen. Bowling Green junior Jon Baasch said he thinks that unhealthy eating habits develop during students' freshman year of college. "I gained more like the Freshman 30," he said. "It's from going to Fresh Food all the time." According to a study at Cornell University, pizza is a main culprit in the weight gain of underclassmen.
Cutters eye high school remodel project
The renovation of Oak Harbor High School is already a couple of million dollars over budget — and it hasn't even started yet. Preliminary estimates show the renovation will cost nearly $54 million, which is $1.99 million more than planned. “This is a little higher than expected," architect Greg Stack said during Monday's school board meeting. He was accompanied by a team of designers and project managers who were on hand to explain why the costs came in so high. Stack attributed the problem to several factors. Approximately $1 million came from increases in the scope of the project, ranging from additional requests to extra requirements placed on the school district by the city. He rattled off a laundry list of increases ranging from the culinary arts lab to off-site road improvements.
Culinary Institute of America, a wonderful treat to myself
Nestled along the hills of world famous and renowned Napa Valley, about two hours North East of San Francisco is a huge old building which houses another famous landmark, the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). Technically, it is situated in St. Helena and is known as CIA, St. Helena, California Campus. The other campus is at Hyde Park, New York in the East Coast. Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo Since I was staying with my kumpare Tony and kumare Susan (their 2nd child is my godchild) in Clayton, our trip to the Napa Valley was cut in half. Only an hour away, passing through Vallejo, another favorite destination of Pinoys in the San Francisco bay area, my "tourist" guide, in the person of Maribel or Ibing as she is fondly called, drove me to the beautiful hills of Napa Valley in her lovely BMW car! Maribel, also a registered nurse, originally hails from Dipolog City but grew up in Dumaguete City.
Food labelling hard to swallow
A plan to put traffic lights on food to let shoppers know if they are making a healthy choice could be in for a bumpy ride. Parliament's health committee says New Zealanders are eating too much, not working it off and creating an obesity and diabetes epidemic. One in five New Zealanders are obese and 200,000 have diabetes. And with each new case, the health system is feeling the strain, so the select committee is suggesting the colour coding as another way to keep obesity in check. Maori, Pacific Islanders and children are most at risk and politicians want people to drop the unhealthy food and head for the bag of fruit. If you don't know your healthy from your fatty they want to introduce a traffic light system - with a red light denoting bad food and green light good.
