Lessons from a 'wine geek'

My father started calling himself a wine "connoisseur" long before I was old enough to know the meaning of the word. Instead of understanding it had something to do with being a specialist or an expert, I thought it had something to do with sewers.

This became all too clear one day after he had made the wine purchase of a lifetime at our neighborhood Walgreens store. I was about 7 at the time.

Business briefs

Endo Pharmaceuticals, of Chadds Ford, and Vernalis, of Winnerish, United Kingdom, said the Food and Drug Administration has requested more time to review the companies' application to market Frova, a painkiller, for the short-term prevention of menstrual migraine headaches. The FDA was originally scheduled to reach a decision by Aug. 19. The agency has not asked for any additional information or clinical trial data, the companies said.

Regional Produce Market, Sysco may have to leave Phila. to grow

The Philadelphia Regional Produce Market has been trying for six years to get growing room. Bill Tubb, the local chief executive of Sysco Corp., the big restaurant-supply firm, says he can top that.

His company has been working for nine years to get a larger site in Philadelphia, and is about ready to move to New Jersey if it cannot do so.

Both enterprises have identified South Philadelphia sites that would work, and both are at the mercy of warring political and business forces.

They employ a total of 1,600 people - 500 at Sysco and 1,100 at the produce market. If they were able to expand, they say they would hire several hundred more.

"We want to stay in Philadelphia," Tubb said, because his employees and customers are used to the South Philadelphia location. In May, it appeared that a new facility would be under construction by now, but a threatened lawsuit from maritime interests could cause a lengthy delay.

Our view: The truth-cast: One hurricane is one too many

It's the last weekend, and probably the hottest, before most kids in Central Louisiana head back to school. The forecast calls for temperatures of 100 degrees and higher into next week. If you head outdoors, be careful. Things to do this weekend include a birding hike today at the Louisiana State Arboretum in Ville Platte; the New Play Festival III tonight at the Kress Theatre in Alexandria, and a concert by the Pine Ridge Quartet in Aimwell. For details, check the calendar in the Saturday a.m. section and online at www.thetowntalk.com.

Elsewhere in the news, hurricane forecasters predict fewer storms; a Baptist seminary will offer a homemaking program this fall; and some experts say the next decade will be a bit warmer.
