E-town's fair wet and well stocked

If a giant dome fell from the sky sealing the Elizabethtown Fair from the rest of the world, there is a good chance the event would spur its own biosphere.

Resources could last years at the 34th annual fair and some attendees, especially those in sandals, would likely embrace the giant cover as shelter from the stubborn rain, which soaked the fairgrounds all through opening night on Monday.

Trapped critters and comforts would include furry bunnies and prickly reptiles, a four-tiered chocolate fountain, oak-wood dining rooms, fireplaces, a baby grand piano, funnel cakes galore, plates of fries fit (and named) for a rhino, windows, sinks, bathtubs, and 2-foot-wide sunflower heads.

Appropriately, Tom Campbell thinks of the fair as a parallel universe.

Mourners gather for farewell to soldier killed in Afghanistan

A poet, chef, mechanic and soldier, Pvt. Alan J. Austin was more than just a talented young man, his friends and family said.

"We're saying farewell to a good man and a good person," said family friend Reba James. "He was honest. He had a beautiful smile."

Austin, 21, died Aug. 12 of injuries suffered in a noncombat-related accident when his Humvee rolled over near a forward operating base in Sharana, Afghanistan, military officials said.

The machine gunner on the truck, Austin was assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C.

About 100 people gathered at the Sunlight Baptist Tabernacle, in the 6300 block of Laura Koppe, Thursday to say their last goodbyes.

Daughter's amputation tests family's faith, strength

Evi Hulls spins in a glittering blue Cinderella gown, then balances on her right leg and extends her left into the air as she mimics a ballerina she saw on television.

She looks like almost any playful 3-year-old. She demands her father's attention as she dances and then styles her mother's hair using a toy hairdryer. But beneath her skirt, pink plaster encases her left leg from the thigh to where it stops abruptly at her ankle.

Her left foot is gone.
